Question One - What is your reaction to the text you just read? Pretty Deadly is a graphical narrative that introduces a variety of unique characters, the approach to the story overall was cohesive and interesting to come by. I could not stop reading after the first chapter because half the time I was more determined than ever to figure out the characters purpose in all this. My reaction to the story at first was intrigued in how the art direction was going from past to present, then completely amazed by how certain stories of different characters would come together and further push the characters backgrounds all together like a perfectly baked cherry pie. The story "This One Summer" talks about the story of Rose's time at Lake Awago during the summer. As usual, it starts out the same way as it always does, then there are crushes, arguments starting between her mother and father, the guy Rose likes turns out to be a jerk towards his now pregnant girlfriend, and Rose goes against her mother. There are a lot of issues during throughout this story, and towards the end, it was revealed that her mother had a miscarriage the summer before which affected her greatly. It is yet another interesting read, not just by the art but the storyline itself with an interesting composition of the art that is laid out throughout the entire comic. Persepolis is the story starting off in the early 1980s where a young woman named Marjane Satrapi will learn to grow for herself in time from the conflict she deals within her own country. "Asterios Polyp" by David Mazzucchelli was an interesting read from beginning to end, especially that sudden unexpected appearance of that meteorite that I'm pretty sure didn't leave any survivors behind. The overall structure of the art was beautifully created, especially the construct of speech bubbles that varied in every person including their design which would visualize each and everyone's personalities. This art particularly gave me a connection to the reading in understanding how everyone is not the same and we all work in our own different and unique way. Though Asterios and Hana's structure were very different, they were somehow in sync at the party they met at which I appreciated.

It amazed to me that I came this far and had not even learned about anime until a friend pushed me into it halfway through my first year. I've had rare sights of old friends collections of mangas all neatly shelved but filling the entire shelf itself. Point is, if I had opened one of those mangas back then, my room would be filled with hundreds of them. Going into this I almost forgot that there was a structure for reading them. So first of all, I can now admit that I have read a manga, specifically "Battle Angel Alita" by Yukito Kishiro. Overall it was a very interesting story, Yoko (Gally) a cyborg finds herself waking up and realizing the town of Salem is completely filled with dead bodies and killer robots. She meets a couple people along and ends up fighting another cyborg, well three of them on her own. The basic premise after reading the entire volume was that she is looking for her friend and I'm guessing her friend from the first part of the volume. The art...

Jumping into European comics, especially Sci-Fi and Western ones was a new approach for as I have never taken the time to look into it. Also, my mind never called to reading any Sci-Fi whatsoever so this was initially my first time reading anything in that genre. The first graphic comic I looked into was "The Incal", without a doubt was this an interesting read for me, although I didn't read all thirteen volumes of this series I definitely enjoyed the storyline, progression of characters, and the overall art done by the talented Moebius through the first four parts. Hey by the time I'm done with this semester I might even catch up on all of them just to see where John finds himself up. The Metal Hurlant definitely had an interesting approach to introducing various stories in sections. Even if everything was in French, the artwork itself with there scenes of odd-looking characters, and visually interesting colors kept me wanting to see what happened on the next page...

At first, I thought the choice of the protagonist for characters applied to comics, animations, and games to me through the years was diverse, but now it all seems a little dull after reading through it. Despite its overuse through those mediums, I cannot disagree that it is still necessary for the industry because that is how it has always been and people seem to have been fine with it. If you ask me, they can keep working with it as long as there are people are there trying to push away from those stereotypes and create something unique. As surprising as it sounds when it comes to my Peruvian background, I have not felt affected by any of this. Though there was one episode of South Park that made us out to be flute bands, there was nothing overly significant. But I cannot even begin to imagine the issues other ethnicities had to deal with over the years.
